Plot : A week after Chisa committed suicide, her classmates begin to receive emails from her. Hearing rumors fly at school, a quiet withdrawn girl named Lain goes home that day, turns on her dusty Navi computer for the first time and has a conversation with the dead girl. Chisa's message reads that she killed herself because she didn't need her body anymore, and she now exists in The Wired. When Lain asks why someone would do something like that she gets a response: "Because God is here".

Our Review : When you first start watching the series, it makes absolutely no sense, and every episode just seems to be adding to the complexity by introducing new aspects. But by the time you finish it, I guarantee that all of these things will make perfect sense. If you simply can't accept that the story isn't handed to you neatly gift wrapped, and that you may have to fill in the details from your own imagination, then go watch a simpler anime. Imaginative, inventive, mysterious, creepy, profound and hard to watch. A sci-fi/cyberpunk masterpiece of the 90's. Watch it with an open mind!

  1. I’ve mentioned this anime before so I’ve decided to elaborate and review it. I have watched it three times, once with subtitles and twice dubbed. I hope to give an informed opinion on this series.
Let me start off with the positive aspects of the series. The music for its opening theme is nothing short of haunting, it washes over you like a lucid dream. The concept of this anime is brilliant as it aims to raise philosophical questions about our existence.
We are our mind if anything, our bodies hold us back in some respects. If could imprint yourself, your mind into the internet “The Wired” would you do it? So that’s the positive aspects.
Where Serial Experiments Lain fails sometimes is in the execution of the premise. It’s a little convoluted and as the series progresses the message becomes a little diluted. Certainly the opening 6 episodes is where my interest peaked. I consider it similar to Paranoia Agent in this respect.
The concept and philosophical questions this anime tries to raise in essence the blending of man and technology, are much better realised in an anime like Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
However it’s still a decent anime series. I feel a much more realistic rating for it is 7.5/10. If you enjoy this series I would recommend an anime like Texhnolyze.

    • I think this series had a strong start but a hoorible ending. Honestly I expected the series to go somewhere but it didn’t. I rate it 3/10. Biggest waste of my time watching it. They tried to make it philosophical but they failed miserebly. On top of that there were no likable characters and the animation stagnant and repetitive.
