Rating: 7.3/10 (12 votes cast)

Genre : Sci-Fi

Plot : The story of Planetes follows the crew of the DS-12 "Toy Box" of the Space Debris Section, a unit of Technora Corporation. Debris Section's purpose is to prevent the damage or destruction of satellites, space stations and spacecraft from collision with debris in Earth's and the Moon's orbits. They use a number of methods to dispose of the debris, accomplished through the use of EVA suits. The episodes sometimes revolve around debris collection itself, but more often the concept of collecting "trash" in space is merely a storytelling method for building character development. The members of the Debris Section are looked down upon as the lowest members of the company and they must work hard to prove their worth to others and accomplish their dreams.

Our Review : Apart from the development of the regular characters of the show, every episode contains a story in that vein, with a great deal of insight and care for consistency. It is harder to show something gripping in science fiction with more-or-less realistic technology than in a flashy movie where the technology used is nothing short of magical, yet Planetes achieves that in every episode. Also, since the future gadgetry depicted is so often directly connected with the plot, and at the same time, so believable. The animation is flawless, the story is filled with humor, and the soundtrack has superb music. It starts really silly, but ends very well.

  1. List order is done by voting.
Those who voted other things higher than this obviously have not watched it. I’ve watched most on this list. Planetes is, by FAR the best Scifi anime.

However, despite watching 95% of all my anime in subs, I recommend watching this one dubbed. To many subtle inflections that make a world of difference are missed if you try to watch it in Japanese.

This is the most hard sci-fi ever. I watched it with astrophysics college students. With most sci-fis, they would point out the science flaws and then reference their textbooks and prove it. When they challenged Planetes, they found out that THEY, not the show, were wrong.

Also, the sociology, the psycholgy, the politics, the emotions, everything is spot-on to real life.

This is more than more true-to-life than any other sci-fi anime.
It’s more true to life than any other sci-fi period.
It’s more realistic than Ghost in the Shell, Star Trek. Heck, it’s more true-to-life than CSI or House.

And so, when later in the series, events will happen. And everything up to (and including) that point has been so real-to-life, that it hits you. Like a ton of bricks it will hit you. More than any movie or series will hit you, it will hit you. More than the ending of Old Yeller hitting you, it will hit you.

    And it will change you.

Planetes goes way beyond the best Anime Sci-fi of all time.
It’s the best fiction of all time.

Hands down. No contest. You watch it, and it is staring into the soul of our own future.

    • Thanks Josh for your concern. And we also thought that Planetes should be placed little higher in your ” top 10 sci-fi anime series ” so now we have move it up to 3rd position from 5th one.
