HEIDI (1974)

Heidi is part of the World Masterpiece Theater series and the best amongst them for me. It is based on a famous children’s book, about the life of a kind girl, raised on beautiful European mountains.

Vivid colors, cheerful music themes and simple character figures are the trademarks of this anime. It does what is supposed in the most basic and recognizable way.

ART SECTION: 6/10 [If you are accustomed to watching ultra detailed graphics, look elsewhere.]
This series has simple drawings that calm the viewer (or make him fall asleep, depending on his tastes). It didn’t really need any better graphics to depict the story and the character’s personalities. The animation fluidity is quite good as there is hardly any choppy or flat (fake) movement.

There is nothing wrong with the detailing of the world of the series. The pastures look sweet, the city big and confusing, the luxurious mansion really looks luxurious. It’s just that all its detailing pales before the animation of Hayao Miyazaki’s movies, which are also aiming at children.

SOUND SECTION: 6/10 [If you are accustomed to listening to ultra epic music, look elsewhere.]
The music themes were simple and soul smoothing but nothing worth remembering. Voice acting was decent but since there were no extreme situations, the potential of the voice actors is not allowed to shine and feels mediocre.

STORY SECTION: 6/10 [Nothing unexpected happens in it but it is quite heart-warming for the messages it tries to promote.]
The story is about Heidi, a little girl, raised by her grandfather on a remote mountain peak. There are very few people around there (she mostly talks with a boy shepherd), so she spends her time playing in the valley with the animals and enjoying a simple bucolic life. She is later sent to a big city, in order to be educated and socialized with other people. She becomes friends with a paralyzed girl in a rich family, which have the exactly opposite personality she has. Heidi dislikes the noisy, confining and perplexing city life and prefers her simple, free life on the mountain. The family on the other hand, believes in good manners, timid behavior and strict morality and finds Heidi a stupid and wild person.

The story is of course Heidi learning from every new thing and place she sees and even teaching those stuck-up city folks a thing or two about happiness and feelings. There is nothing wrong with it, but then again there is also nothing unexpected in it to keep you interested for more.

CHARACTER SECTION: 7/10 [Simply likable.]
Although all the characters are stereotypes, they are portrayed in a very good way and are thus a lot more enjoyable than what they first appear to be. The kind-hearted Heidy, her grumpy grandfather, the wild boy shepherd, the frail city girl and its stuck-up mother are very easy to understand and bind with.

ENJOYMENT SECTION: 7/10 [This series is ALL ABOUT the characters.]
Forget the story and the graphics. You will like it only if you like its characters. So, the Enjoyment section is in fact the same as the Character section.

VALUE SECTION: 4/10 [Not my cup of tea.]
Although it is a fine children’s story, I am not fond of it. I prefer more violent and in-depth series. So, don’t get me wrong; I just don’t watch kiddy series anymore. There is no reason to watch this series ever again; it is pretty easy to remember what happened in it.

VERDICT: 6.5 / 10
The accused is found … NOT GUILTY! … He is very naïve but his heart is pure and intact.

Anne Of The Green Gables, Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma, Candy Candy, Poor sisters story. All of them have an old European atmosphere to them.
